This book is a translation of the eighth edition of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (NAP, 2011) – a guide widely recognized internationally for its comprehensive coverage of scientifically sound guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animals.
The need for such guidelines in Russia is extremely high, as a national regulatory framework regulating the use of experimental animals for scientific and educational purposes has not yet been developed. Meanwhile, the organization of vivarium operations and the conditions for the care and use of laboratory animals determine the reliability, repeatability, and reproducibility of the scientific data obtained.

Only adherence to high standards of experimental practice using laboratory animals will allow Russian scientists to publish their data competitively and have their results recognized by the international scientific community. Previously, the seventh edition of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (1996) was translated into Russian, enabling many institutions to achieve an acceptable level of organization for experimental activities using laboratory animals.

The translation was carried out by specialists with many years of experience working with experimental animals and translating English-language literature: I. V. Belozertseva (PhD, I. P. Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University, St. Petersburg) and M. S. Krasilshchikova (PhD, IBCh RAS, Moscow).
